Frequently asked questions

If yours is not here, email office@miletallypro.co.uk and we will answer — and probably add it.

Do I need to install anything, or turn on location tracking?
No. MileTallyPro runs in a browser and asks for two postcodes. There is no app, no GPS and nothing running in the background draining your battery — which also means you can log the trip you made last Tuesday, rather than having to remember to start a tracker before setting off.
What mileage rate do I get?
HMRC’s Approved Mileage Allowance Payment rates: 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a car or van and 25p after that, 24p for a motorcycle and 20p for a bicycle. The service applies the right one automatically, including the drop to 25p when you pass 10,000 miles.
When does the 10,000-mile threshold reset?
On 6 April, with the UK tax year — not on 1 January. This trips people up often enough that it is worth stating plainly: your allowance resets in April, so miles driven in March and miles driven in April belong to different years and can be worth different amounts.
I am employed and my employer already pays me mileage. Can I still claim?
Often, yes — on the difference. If your employer pays less than the approved rate, you can usually claim tax relief on the shortfall. Tell us what you are reimbursed per mile and the dashboard works from the gap rather than the whole allowance. If you are self-employed, you deduct the whole allowance instead.
How is the distance worked out?
From the road route between the two postcodes, not a straight line. The same journey always measures the same, whatever time of day you enter it, so a record you file today still reproduces the same figure if it is queried in three years.
What if I drove a round with several stops?
Log it as one journey. Enter where you set off and then each stop in order, and every leg is recorded and priced separately while staying grouped as one round — so you do not retype the previous destination as the next origin for every leg.
Is this accepted by HMRC?
HMRC does not approve or certify mileage software. What it asks for is a record of each business journey — date, start and end point, reason and distance — and that is exactly what the report contains, with the approved rates applied. It is a record-keeping tool, not tax advice; if your circumstances are complicated, ask an accountant.
What does it cost?
30 days free with no card, then £3.99 per month or £35.88 per year. The annual plan works out cheaper than paying monthly.
What happens when my trial ends?
Logging new trips stops until you subscribe. Everything you have already recorded stays readable and exportable — the paywall gates the product, not your own records.
Can I cancel?
Any time, from your account page. Your subscription runs to the end of the period you have paid for and then stops. See the cancellation and refunds policy for when money comes back.
What happens to my records if I stop paying, or delete my account?
Stopping payment leaves your records readable and exportable. Deleting your account erases them, along with your profile and subscription — that is not reversible, so export first. HMRC generally expects mileage records to be kept for at least five years.
Can I export for my accountant?
Yes — a PDF to file or sign, and a CSV for a spreadsheet. Both are built from the same figures, so the document and the spreadsheet can never disagree about a journey.
Can I claim for previous tax years?
You can log and report on earlier years, and the report applies the rates that were correct at the time. Whether you can still amend a past return is a question for HMRC or your accountant — the deadlines are theirs, not ours.

Still deciding?

30 days, every feature, no card. If it does not save you the spreadsheet, walk away.
